Mapping a Safer Energy Future
The Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) is a transmission-only electric power company with a system of 534 miles of transmission lines, 25 substations and a 200 megawatt back-to-back HVDC Converter.
A complex organization with hundreds of employees and constituent partners working in the field, VELCO lacked the ability to externalize its sophisticated document management system and make mapping information and other data broadly available across all offices and to staff in the field. To address these issues, VELCO contracted Microdesk to develop a web-based portal that would make the GIS information available system-wide.
The solution was to maximize VELCO’s existing technology, InfoNET, which is an intranet-based mapping system developed in ASP.NET and built on Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise. Microdesk developed a custom MapDesk application that brought critical mapping information to the users’ fingertips, including location-based data, online diagrams and other interactive geographic information. Microdesk also integrated Google Maps Premier API to provide both forward and reverse geo-coding to perform address look-ups, allowing staff to easily locate where system issues occur and quickly route field crews. As a result, VELCO has significantly increased the value of its data–improving efficiency, data management and client service and support. New employees are able to get up to speed faster. Field workers are able to deploy solutions more effectively.
