Embracing BIM for better building
The Columbia Construction Company is a Boston-based construction management firm with an 80-year history of providing construction services for the academic, corporate, life sciences, healthcare, and hospitality sectors. Over the years, Columbia has prided itself in providing quality services using the best technologies available.
In order to remain on the cutting edge of today’s design technologies and fully utilize their programs, Columbia commissioned Microdesk to provide comprehensive on-site training and help them effectively embrace Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. The goal was to enable Columbia to streamline their workflow by increasing collaboration with design teams and delivering more informative models to the owner, decrease change-orders and reduce costs to the client.
Utilizing Revit and Navisworks, Columbia applied Microdesk’s training to develop their first fully-BIM project, a highly-visible commercial development called 175 Wyman Street, located along the main traffic corridor near Boston, MA. Thanks to the seamless integration of each A/E team’s model, Columbia was able to provide a more detailed vision of the full scope of the project; help the subcontractors to easily visualize details and design impacts; and allow the construction team to drill down into the model to detect issues and achieve more accurate estimates early on in the process. Integration and model collaboration also dramatically decreased change orders and schedule delays. As a result, the owner realized maximum efficiency in project delivery with minimal change orders and, in turn, significant cost savings.
