Designing for Efficiency at MBH
THE CHALLENGE: MBH Architects is an architecture and interior design firm headquartered in Alameda, CA, that specializes in retail, hospitality, and high-density residential design. MBH Residential faced staffing challenges for a large mixed-use apartment unit complex project and needed immediate help ensuring a skilled team was in place for it. MBH also needed assistance with identifying how to develop appropriate BIM procedures. The firm’s other division, MBH Retail, was also facing challenges on how to develop templates and content libraries for Revit, in order to revamp their standards for various types of projects.
SOLUTION: Microdesk partnered with MBH by providing full-time onsite technical support, including a BIM Captain to guide the project through the process of implementing BIM through the design development phase. After Microdesk began to work with MBH Residential for a time and was able to fully assess the firm’s needs, it was determined to increase the number of full-time onsite Microdesk consultants to three people to provide more assistance and ensure MBH was meeting the target deadline for the project. Microdesk also provided MBH Architects with production assistance, which included workflow planning, testing, implementation, mentoring, standards migration, documentation, and model management. For MBH Retail, Microdesk provided an additional onsite consultant to develop and enhance their required standards and provide with additional mentoring and production support as required.
RESULTS: After three months of partnering with Microdesk, MBH was able to become more self-sufficient and bridge the skills gap of its staff. The staff has gained ample expertise, to the point where now all new hires are introduced and easily on-boarded to the new BIM processes. MBH was also able to independently develop long-term strategic plans for setting standards for future work based on the services provided by Microdesk.
