Increasing BIM effectiveness
Founded in 1955, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates (SMMA) is an integrated design firm offering architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design services to corporate, technology and institutional clients. SMMA’s ever-evolving process for architectural modeling had become inefficient, limiting the firm’s ability to deliver fully coordinated BIM models. While the firm already utilized Autodesk Revit for architectural modeling, architects were exporting those drawings to AutoCAD for the engineering department to render 2D sketches, a tedious process that made it difficult to anticipate and prevent problems across all disciplines and control overtime.
Microdesk’s solution was to provide custom training, support and develop standards to help their engineering team make the transition to BIM and more effectively utilize their AutoCAD and Revit technology. As a result, the firm improved its ability to construct accurate 2D and 3D designs, as well as to more effectively communicate information and ideas on design schemes and create contract documents.
Microdesk also helped SMMA find ways to extend and complement their technology by integrating other specialized software, including scheduling technology and facility management tools that help to further improve efficiency and add value to their client deliverables. As a result, SMMA has been able to expand its product portfolio, reduce overtime and deliver fully coordinated BIM models, making them more competitive in the design marketplace.
